ScholarWorks Enhancements

David

Abstract-only works

  • Some of these items have files to upload, but still aren’t considered full-text items

  • The icon in place of the document thumbnail indicates no full text available to download. Will this be clear to users?

  • Managers will be able to check a box in the description section to indicate that it’s an abstract, in addition to the uploads section.

    • This will allow for easier limiting of results, and prevent abstracts from being harvested in Primo.

DOI Minting

  • Discussion during the DR Annual Meeting, with some campuses interested in minting DOIs for repository items.

  • CrossRef and DataCite are the two common tools, but neither is optimal.

    • CrossRef is cheaper, but the workflows are better suited for batch DOI assignments for journal issues. It would be a complex process to integrate it into Hyrax.

    • DataCite is more expensive, based out of Eurpoe which could cause privacy concerns, but it’s better designed for one-off DOIs. It has a simpler integration into Hyrax

  • Potential use cases for minted DOI:

    • ETDs- current, limited to only those that are publicly available

    • Datasets

    • One-off requests

  • Would they be applied retroactively to existing works?

  • Would they be applied to newly digitized (but older) works?

Dates of ETDs in ScholarWorks

  • Ran into an issue with the dates for ETD since these projects come from Grad Studies 1-2 months after they’re approved.

    • The date added to scholarworks served as the date of publication which caused confusion for those searching for the project by date.

  • SF and SJ both use only the year for ETDs to avoid these issues. Fullerton uses date and an assigned month to indicate the semester.

Digital Library Repository Guide / ScholarWorks Toolkit Google Doc

  • We will continue working on the Drupal Site.

    • Carmen would like to continue working on this with us on this project

    • We may need to redistribute work formerly done by Amy and Carmen

  • Logins needed for Katie, Michaela, and Chris.

  • Marcus added to the Collections section.

  • Part of the next meeting will be spent working on this together.

    • Carmen will be invited for that portion of the meeting.
