Sacramento:

Changes on Campus:

Sacramento State will be the home of a new center for Black student success to develop programs across the 23-campus California State University system and in underserved communities throughout the state, officials announced Thursday. An initial $1.3 million will fund the CSU Statewide Central Office for the Advancement of Black Excellence, part of $10 million to stand up initiatives to promote the success of Black students.

It will build off a slate of recommendations laid out last June in the university system’s Black Student Success Report. System-wide early outreach, culturally relevant curriculum and building the infrastructure needed to support student success were among the proposals and could potentially be put into action through the new California State University, Sacramento-based office. The mission of the statewide hub, said CSU Chancellor Mildred García, is “not only to accelerate action and drive change across our 23 universities, but, clearly demonstrate our institution’s deep commitment to becoming a national leader in Black student success.” Sacramento State campus is home to the largest Black student enrollment in the statewide system. Nearly 2,000 students who identify as Black or African American are enrolled at Sacramento State, representing 6% of the total student population.

CSU leaders launched Graduation Initiative 2025 to increase Black student enrollment and boost the numbers of students of color in the system but equity gaps persist. Read more at: https://www.sacbee.com/news/equity-lab/representation/article288435027.html#storylink=cpy [sacbee.com]

Cal State LA will be meeting with Clarivate to learn more about Alethea [clarivate.com] (Tracy Elliott, at Florida Gulf Coast University, is an early adopter)

  • Alethea is a GenAI powered integrated teaching and learning platform

Channel Islands:

  • Our  2023 library dean search was cancelled, and we don’t have another search planned for the time being. We have a temporary structure in which Jill Leafstedt, Dean of Extended University, has taken on the Library & Learning Resources as part of her portfolio. I’m still overseeing operations much as I did when I was Acting Dean. Jill has shared with me that in her temporary role, she does not have the capacity to get involved with COLD. She has been a great support to me and you’re welcome to contact her with any questions.

  • We lost one of our 3 full-time senior librarians recently – Colleen Harris, who was unit head for Instruction, Engagement, and Assessment, she is now Dean of the Library at Texas A&M International in Laredo. So, we’re down to 2 tenured library faculty, but we have a strong team of TT and non-TT earlier career faculty who are high performing and fantastic!

  • Campus is in the process of recruiting three AVPs, including an AVP for Research and Sponsored Programs and two others due to folks retiring or stepping into other positions.

  • There haven’t been Gaza-related protests on our campus yet, but there has been quiet preparation just in case.

  • There is a lot of discussion of impending budget cuts going forward, but we don’t have information on specifics of how the cuts will impact the library. This is an important time for the library as we have two and possibly three open lines, and we’re trying to figure out how to continue operations if those lines are not filled.

  • Congratulations to those retiring or stepping away! Despite my limited experience on COLD, I think almost all of you have mentored or advised me in some small way since I started at CSUCI (even if you don’t remember – I do!), and you have been inspiring leaders.

CSUMB:

CSUMB is among the campuses experiencing budget challenges. VSIP has just closed. Not losing any library positions, but holding a couple vacant ones or filling with temporary staff/faculty.

We have a permanent provost! Internal candidate was successful.

Search for library dean will take place this fall

Maritime:

Some updates from Maritime:

Interim President Dumont invoked Article 38.3 of the CFA contract to allow for possible faculty layoffs. CSUM's budget remains $1 to $1.5 million over for AY24-25 so it seems inevitable that layoffs to staff and some management positions may occur. Faculty "reassigned time" is being looked at for elimination when possible.

We've already seen a number of management positions in Student Affairs and the Corps of Cadets go away. The school has no funds to offer any voluntary separation incentives.

More restructuring of management positions has eliminated any VP-level positions starting July 1, 2024. This, in turn, will likely change any AVPs to a new title/designation. The breakdown is:

  1. The chief academic officer will no longer be a Provost but an "Executive Dean of Academic Affairs" (which is being recruited for now. The current Provost will retreat to faculty),

  2. the VP of Student Affairs will become the Dean of Student Affairs,

  3. the VP of Advancement position search was failed and then the position was eliminated,

  4. the VP of Admin and Finance will be replaced by a University Controller & Director of Financial Services (which is being recruited for now),

  5. the AVP of Human Resources was never replaced and an internal employee was made "Chief HR Officer",

  6. the AVP for Admissions and Enrollment was eliminated to be replaced by a Director of Admissions,

  7. the CIO was not replaced and plans are to pursue "shared services" in this area with another CSU;

  8. The Head of Academic Technology will oversee day-to-day IT matters,

  9. The "Corps of Cadets" leadership will go from "1 lead Commandant and 3 Division Commandants" to "1 Director of Cadet Leadership and Development" (also in recruitment).

For now, Academic Affairs will exist with an Executive Dean and the current 3 School Deans' model.

As I have decided to retire as of June 1, 2024, the Dean of Letters and Sciences will be made the "Interim Library Dean" for the foreseeable future. The current vision of the Provost is to upgrade one of the librarians to a "Supervisory Librarian" role (with pay increase) for the day-to-day oversight of the library operations. We're still trying to find a common ground with the librarians and CFA on what precisely MPP work is and what is library faculty oversight work.

A big cultural change is that the Interim President has decided that Maritime will have an "opt-in" Corps of Cadets for any students in non-Coast Guard license seeking programs. This means that students in non-license program will no longer have to attend morning formations or wear a uniform. The details for this are still being worked out, such as an alternate "dress code" for non-licensed students.

Maritime is still on target to receive a newly built training ship in 2026, https://www.csum.edu/facilities-planning-design-and-construction/capital-improvement-projects/boat-basin-and-pier-expansion.html [csum.edu]. The upgrades and renovations to the pier will cost approximately $100-150 million.

Enrollment continues to lag, especially with the FAFSA complications. And, last tidbit, we did our Commencement ceremony in constant windy, cold, and rainy conditions. What a day!

East Bay:

  1. Offer has been extended to a candidate for Library Dean. Hopefully, they will start in the Fall.

  2. Enrollment is down about 25% at East Bay.

Bakersfield:

Filled our FERP replacement line with an Assessment Librarian who starts end of May 2024.

Our other FERP line is captured for 1-2 years.

New staff line, ASA I, part time, starts June 3rd.
