CAT Meeting Minutes 5.23.16
CAT Meeting
May 23, 2016
4:00-5:00 p.m.
Virtual meeting using Zoom
Members present: Jen Fabbi (San Marcos, Chair), Diana Wu (San Jose State), Monica Fusich (Fresno), Stephanie Alexander (East Bay), Laurie Borchard (Northridge), Michele Van Hoeck (California Maritime Academy), Tiffini Travis (Long Beach) and Laura Gil-Trejo (Fullerton, Consultant).
Members absent: Felicia Kalker (Sonoma State), Sue Thompson (San Marcos), and Sarah Dahlen (Monterey Bay)
- Meeting Minutes: April meeting minutes were approved. Finalized and added to Google drive.
- ACRL Metrics discussion: The funding proposal was disseminated and voted on by Library Deans on April 29. Deans voted to subscribe to ACRL Metrics if funds are available (that is still yet to be seen) and to discontinue the CO statistical survey. We still have not received confirmation of award, but it really is a small amount of funding. Felicia compared the CO statistical survey and ACRL Metrics and found that there was only one minor difference between them. Jen has reached out to Gale Etschmaier, Chair of COLD for confirmation of budget, as some campuses will want to cancel their individual subscriptions to ACRL Metrics.
- Toolbox sub-group updates
- (WASC--Michele): 14 institutions on the list that they started with and dug around for information in self-reports and renewal letters. Synthesis of what she has found will be ready by next meeting. Jen said this information will show us how institutions in their self-study are choosing to characterize libraries or IL. What institutions actually do to assess IL – will likely need to be done by interviews because the information is all over the place with some campuses providing a lot of information and several others providing scant information. Gathering the tools that people are using on their campus to assess IL. Amy Wallace, at Channel Islands brought to Michelle and Jen's attention whether we wanted to call out any tool or best tools? (how would this be judged?) There was no indication through Michele's work that shows that any institution was really failing on this component. WASC didn't really reprimand any institution. All but one had their accreditation renewed for the next nine to ten years.
- Digital Learning Objects (Laurie): Contacted each of the campuses. They are trying to figure out how to present the information.
- Pilot Update (Laura): Laura and Jen have been communicating over email. Laura will work on the analyses based on original research questions.
- COLD strategic planning update and 2016-17 action item discussion (Michele and Jen): At the COLD meeting in April, the Deans started a strategic planning process. There was discussion of "Assessment/Analytics as a Strategic Focus for COLD" document. Michele will send a rough draft of a briefly worded "direction" for us to work on at the next meeting. Discussion at this meeting focused on:
- Developing a culture of assessment
- Evidence based decisions making
- IL should be part of it
- Support/ guidance for the library's role in accreditation
- Leveraging communities of practice and a shared ULMS
- Partner with EAR committee on collections use? Discussion on how we will develop wording for the focus area but don't have to do all of the work.
- Membership update (Jen & Michele): We have four new members 2016-2018: Ann Agee from San Jose State, Charissa Jefferson from Northridge, Katherine O'Claire from Cal Poly SLO, and Lindsey O'Niell from Fullerton. Stephanie Brasley from Dominguez Hills will be joining as Vice Chair. Sarah Dahlen, Monica Fusich, Sue Thompson, Felicia Kalker, and Laura (until pilot data is analyzed) remain on the committee. See roster below.
- Announcements (all)
- Anna Gold at SLO is getting IL module added to NSSE Survey. Could the campuses collaborate on this as a learning tool? This module asks students if they have engaged in the following tasks in their coursework. Six campuses have responded to Anna that they are using it. $150.00 for the module. NSSE is well respected. Jen says it was just included in the NSSE at her campus this spring, and her Institutional Research office will do the analysis. It actually could be free depending on how many other modules your campus has purchased. We may want to advocate for this at COLD.
- Climate Qual was just implemented at CSU Northridge. There was some discussion about results from other campuses who have implemented.
- Adjourned. Next meeting is scheduled June 27 from 3-4 p.m.
