Why are we doing this?

To develop consortial guidelines on how records are imported and normalized in the Network Zone.

Goals

Establish policies on treatment of NZ records to prevent duplicates and protect crucial information, such as Marc 035 tag in a consortial environment.

  • Determine if import profiles may delete NZ records.
  • Develop normalization and merge rules that can be applied CSU-wide in import profiles.
  • Designate a match method and management tags that apply CSU-wide using the NZ import profile.
  • Determine how CSU libraries’ holdings will be represented in OCLC Worldcat.
  • Develop system-wide naming conventions for shared import profiles/normalization rules.

2017 Objectives

  • Review and finalize task force policies
    • match methods
    • merge methods
    • management tags
    • network zone normalization

  • Develop guidelines and procedures on importing vendor records without OCLC numbers
    • match methods to use when records lack OCLC numbers
    • how to manually handle or automatically merge matched records
