There are several methods for creating new records for bound-withs in Alma. Only one method will work under the OCLC master record approach adopted for by CSU libraries. For procedures, see “Bound-withs: Create a Host Bibliographic Record.”

CSU libraries must use the standard method below below when creating new records for a bound-with to ensure linking information is stored in the IZ and protected from overlay. Host bibliographic records in the IZ should be suppressed, including records created for bound-withs during migration.


Standard method

A brief ‘host bibliographic record’ is created in the IZ, with a holdings record and 774 fields for the constituent parts of the bound-with. Separate bibliographic records exist in the NZ for each constituent title, but without holdings records.

  1. This method may be suggested by Ex Libris, but CSU libraries should not follow it. Linking fields (774) are added to one of the constituent bib records, making it serve as the host record. Holdings are attached to this bib, and the other bibs become related records.

Holdings are attached to this bib, and the other records become related records. Linking fields (773) are then added to the related records, pointing back to the host record.
