Source of bibliographic records

 

Option 1:     CZ records. Quality v. Efficiency

Option 2:     records direct from vendor (no oclc numbers)

Option 3:     Worldshare Record Sets

Option 4:     PCI

 

Availability – Quality -- Efficiency

 

Quality of records (lack of subject headings, call numbers) has impact on user discovery and collection development assessment efforts. 

 

Efficiency—

 CZ records and portfolios managed by ExLibris. Most efficient. Currency and accuracy are questionable. Advocate for better quality from ExL. . [Alternative: Use CZ portfolios but link to fuller bib records imported to NZ—workload issues]  CZ may not include metadata for PDA/EBA collections that are based on special profile

 Direct from vendor. Relatively easy process for monthly updates using import profile, but no OCLC numbers.

 Worldshare record sets monthly update process maybe more difficult.

 

 

Management—Activation and maintenance:  Centrally or by Institution

 

Location of Collections/Records/Portfolios – NZ or IZ

 

Additional Considerations:  PDA/EBA may want to require use of de-duping and display logic to hide PDA record when record for same title exists in another collection to prevent purchase of owned item.

Do packages like these exist??

May be subscribed to by more than one institution but

May or may not have same content and license for all subscribing institutions

 

Best managed by individual institutions?

Each institution makes choice on where to get records and manages content in IZ only (not in network zone)

 

 

Individual ebooks purchased by individual institutions

 

Option 1: Cataloged individually by each institution. Search NZ first and attach holdings, if not, add Worldcat record to NZ. Best practice to create local collections where possible (Ebrary, EBL, Ebsco, Wiley, etc)

 

Option 2: Use of Worldshare/YBP partner records purchased by individual institutions. How would this work?
