Rights Statement, License recap

• Implementation team recommendation:

  • Change Rights Statement field to a copyright field statement without license-based descriptions.

  • (Proposed) Rights Statement
    - "Copyright owned by creator"
    - "Copyright owned by institution", with a text field extension
    - "Copyright owned by a third party", with a text field extension
    - Public domain
    - (Suspected) Orphan work

  • For orphan works, "No Known Copyright" might be a good fit. We have a copyright date field on publications to extend this entry.

  • (Proposed) License field
    - 6 flavors of CC licenses
    - 3 Open Data Commons licenses
    - Others as needed

  • To implement, I’ve proposed two additional rights fields, rights note and rights URI. This allows for both full text description/URIs for local implementation concerns/extensions.
