Ex Libris currently maintains two indexes for Primo & Summon. In order to support “new ways of discovery, beyond just the one result list option” and “enhance such areas by creating data relationships that enable us to release more exploration paths and smart discovery services”, Ex Libris is “creating a unified index” aka the Central Discovery Index.

Libraries will be switching over from the PCI to CDI over the next few months. As NA03 members, CDI will be enabled for us on Mar. 22, 2020 and the general switchover is scheduled for Aug. 09, 2020. The following is the proposed plan for the switchover.

    1. Read each article found here

    2. Watch the following webinars

      1. Ex Libris Central Discovery Index: An Overview and Update - May 2019

      2. Central Discovery Index (CDI) Update - Oct. 2019

      3. Customer Training Single Activation on Alma

      4. Written Transcript of CSU CDI Webinar

  2. Subscribe to CDI Move Notifications:

    1. Click here: https://status.exlibrisgroup.com/

    2. Sign up for Alma NA03

    3. Sign up for Primo NA11

  3. Review New, Updated, and Deprecated Resource Types. Review list of resource types in case any are used locally. More information can be found here

  1. Ex Libris will enable the Alma Activation reports in each of our Alma environments on March 17. CDI WILL NOT BE ENABLED, just the reports.

  2. Review the report

    1. Review the report and check off what collections you want to be activated in the IZ

      1. Download the PC to Alma Activation report

        1. Resources>Advanced Tools>PC to CDI Activation Reports

        2. Download the Excel Sheet

        3. Insert a new column “Activate in our IZ”

        4. Let us know what you’d like activated in your IZ.

          1. Yes, if it's a collection I manage in the IZ

          2. No, if it's a collection managed in the NZ

          3. No, if I changed my mind or no longer subscribe to the collection.

        5. Here is a short video as an example

  3. Place completed reports here by April 15.

    1. Use your institution as the file name. Ex.San Francisco State University

    2. The ERM team will use this Google sheet to track responses. We will use this list contact anyone that has not responded.

  4. Return to Ex Libris

    1. Ex Libris would like reports to be returned at the same time by the ERM team. We will facilitate this.

“In this phase, we move your activations from your Primo Central institutional profile to Alma and enable all CDI functionality on Alma.” in the PC to CDI Activation Report  “that is viewable in your Alma environment: 1. A list of all your active collections in your Primo Central institutional profile. 2. The actions that were performed on each collection that was processed in the move to Alma.”

  1. Re-Check Activations

    1. Check out the PC to Alma Activation report

      1. Resources>Advanced Tools>PC to CDI Activation Reports

      2. Explore CDI activation in Alma

      3. Keep in mind: Known CDI Issues and Gaps

  2. Read the Rollout Plan for Alma Customers

    1. Note: “All Primo Central activations will be activated in your Alma production environment for search as they were in your Primo Central institutional profile at the time of the move. Collections that are set to full text available at the collection level in Primo Central, but are not active for full text in Alma will receive the following status: Activated for CDI only. You can track those activations in the move report. Any changes that you make to your Primo Central institutional profile after the move will not automatically appear in Alma and will have to be added manually. However, many of those activations may already occur in Alma as part of your activation flows.

  3. Assign the CDI Inventory Operator role to the appropriate staff. Ex Libris recommends combining the CDI Inventory Operator with the existing Electronic Collection Inventory Operator role.

  4.  “Publishing to CDI will be enabled, and CDI will be localized with your Alma settings. Activation changes from Alma (including the activations from the move from Primo Central) take between 24 and 48 hours to take effect.”

    1. As Brandon said, enablement, “should have no impact on current operations using PCI” however this does mean that both the PCI and CDI will have to be maintained simultaneously until the migration.

  5. Currently all institutions in a consortium (connected to one Alma network) need to be on the same setting. FullyFlexible is the default but can move to EasyActive as a consortium.

    1. If we remain on Fully Flexible then we will need to maintain alternative coverage. If we move to EasyActive then alternative coverage is automatically maintained.

      1. Notes on Alternative Coverage

  6. If an individual campus would like to move to EasyActive (works similar to Summon) please contact @Jessica Hartwigsen. This is not an option yet but we can submit a request to Ex Libris to see if this is possible.

  7. Submit feedback here. If folks ask cdi_info@exlibrisgroup.com and get an answer that you’d like to be placed on the wiki, please use the form or email one of the group members.

  8. The ERM team will work with @Jessica Hartwigsen to enable manually enable the NZ collections.

Work with the Discovery group and public staff to test out the CDI instance for a period of one month or so.

  1. “In order to view CDI collections in your Primo production environment, simply add &searchCDI=true to the end of your Primo URL”

  2. Resources of interest:

    1. What patrons will see…

    2. Match & Merge Story

    3. CDI Resource Types

  3. Note of warning:

    1. The tech is different so there will be a change in search & ranking:

      1. CDI will return a much larger number of results for most searches”

      2. More granular resource types

      3. Known CDI Issues and Gaps

    2. The doc ids will be changed but a process was identified to preserve the permalinks. Their testing shows they were able to preserve 92% of the permalinks.

  4. The ULMS ERM group has worked on updating NZ collection to CDI Search :Yes. However, if full-text access is set up in the NZ, resources from those collections should be found within libraries Primo instance if they are sharing the collection. Instructions for checking discoverability of NZ managed collections can be found here.

  5. Issues? Please submit a salesforce ticket and CC Jessica Hartwigsen. If folks ask cdi_info@exlibrisgroup.com and get an answer that you’d like to be placed on the wiki, please email one of the group members.
