ScholarWorks Update - October 2018

SWAT Task Force meeting

The COLD SWAT Task Force had its first meeting on Monday. The task force split into two groups: one focused on an internal needs assessment of the CSU libraries related to questions around the implementation of ScholarWorks as a single institutional repository, and the other focused on an external scan of other consortia and university systems implementing shared institutional repository and digital library platforms. With an emphasis on an expeditious review, the groups agreed to meet on a weekly basis with a bi-weekly follow up.

Open Journal Systems

We have a new test instance of OJS up and running with the latest version of OJS. The ScholarWorks Publishing IG has provided feedback on application requirements, including anticipated users (both internal and external), themes, and plugins. We’ve also completed the migration of the PUMP Journal from Dominguez Hills into the new test system, which has allowed us to solidify the workflow for migrating locally-hosted OJS journals to the centrally-hosted OJS.

We’re planning to replicate the test system to production at the end of next week, replacing the current (beta) OJS system. The new production system will be purged of any test journals.

Samvera Connect

This year’s Samvera Connect conference in Salt Lake City was a fantastic opportunity to meet with Samverans across the United States and internationally. The plenary session provided insights into the Samvera Community at large, including the efforts of multiple working groups and sprints for Collections Extensions and IIIF/Universal Viewer released last spring. The Hyrax roadmap focused on upcoming efforts on analytics, bulk tasks, accessibility, and Valkyrie, a new module that would potentially allow us to swap out Fedora for Postgres for persistence.

Most of the parallel sessions covered topics on Samvera solution bundles -- Hyrax, Avalon, and Hyku. Presentations on AWS services included Terraform and deployments from Elastic Container Services. As we continue to grow our repository, working with and tracking developments within Samvera will be critical to meeting the diverse use cases of our Systemwide repository environment.

Development and migration update

During Samvera Connect, there was a lot of discussion regarding Valkyrie and its future within Hyrax. As addressed during the ScholarWorks monthly meeting, our current migration processes need to be improved, and solutions may become available through Valkyrie. We will continue to track developments regarding Valkyrie as they become available.

We’ve also been working on ETD requirements within Hyrax with Carmen and Amy at San Marcos, where we’ve focused on refining self deposits through their campus instance. Working with the Metadata/Linked Data interest group, we’re reviewing our current recommended ETD model, as well as pursuing recommendations for faculty publications and datasets.
