Background

Network Zone OCLC Integrations (Search External Resources and Connexion Export) will use a normalization rule that will be configured in the network zone instance and used by all campuses.  This document describes the CSU-wide normalization rule used in these integrations.

Policy Statement

Explain effects of NZ norm rule and rationale for why each institution may want to copy the norm rule used for OCLC record import and merge for use with their local IZ.

The current normalization rule, CSU Remove 029,938,948 removes the 029, 938 and 948 Marc fields from the NZ record. The 029 is removed because it is a vendor control number and serves no function in Alma. Futhermore, the Orbis Cascade Alliance found that numerous 029 fields caused problems with record processing. The 938 and 948 Marc fields are also vendor numbers and have no function in Alma.

Best practice recommendations

The normalization rule, CSU Remove 029,938,948 should be used in the NZ OCLC integrations for Search External Resources and Connexion.

Procedures in Alma

Describe how to access the NZ 029,938,948 removal rule and add as a process in Alma for each institution who would like to use the same normalization rule when working with their Institution Zone.

The normalizaton rule, CSU Remove 029,938,948 is applied at the NZ level. Optionally, if a campus would like to apply to its instance of Alma the rule is shared and available to use.
