Charge

The Data Visualization Task Force explores, tests, and creates documentation and best practices for using data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, others) with CSU library systems technologies (e.g., Alma and Primo, Primo, Inter-Library Loan software, etc.).

Vision

The vision of this group is to facilitate the creation of an accessible, shareable, and scaleable data visualization system or platform that can be used to generate intuitive, interactive and beautiful data visualizations to better understand how library collections and systems are being used and promote data-driven decision-making.  These visualizations will be shared with a variety of internal (library staff) and external (public) stakeholders.  Protecting user privacy, while facilitating visualizations that help the CSU understand the return on investment of its collections and systems are essential components of this project.

The preliminary scope of this project involves creating visualizations from data available through Alma (NZ and IZ data) and Primo analytics.  However, this task force will be mindful of and develop infrastructure for visualizing data from other library systems that are common across the CSU, including (but not limited to) data from:

• Alma/Primo
• Circulation not tracked in Alma (e.g., laptops/equipment)
• EZProxy (log analysis)
• ILLiad/Tipasa
• Building/space usage
• Gate counts
• Classroom usage
• Study room usage
• Software/workstation usage
• Instruction & Reference, such as:
• # of sessions
• # of students per session
• Reference questions (e.g.,  Gimlet/ServiceNow)
• Learning outcomes assessment (possibly)
• SpringShare
• LibAnswers
• LibGuides
• LibCal (room bookings, equipment booking, event attendance)
• Google Analytics
• Spreadsheets
• Financial Data:
• CSU Financial Data Warehouse
• Financial Data (non-Collections, e.g., ILL)

The scope of this project specifically excludes the collection or analysis of Personally Identifying Information (PII) data.  The scope of this project is to enable data analysis, visualization, and data-driven decision-making at the aggregate level, not facilitate the ability to analyze data about individuals.  The Environmental Scan and Needs Assessment aspects of this project will identify mechanisms for ensuring that the privacy of individual library users and personnel is protected.

• Needs Assessment for Data Visualization Solution for the CSU System (Expected completion date:  September 1, 2018)
